Every mapped trail, by length in Halton Hills

Length inside the official boundary, longest first. “Whole trail” is the length the layer states for the trail everywhere it runs. Trails overlap (a side trail or club section on the main footpath, a cycling route along a road a trail also uses), so the lengths are not added up.

Conservation areas open to the public

Those whose conservation authority's own park page gives a location in Halton Hills. Hours, fees and parking are the authority's to state; each name links its page.

Conservation authorities

The approximate share of Halton Hills’ land in each conservation authority’s area, estimated by grid sampling. The authority whose area a property is in is the one that issues permits for work in and near the rivers, wetlands and hazard lands it regulates. Each name links the authority’s own site.

How these figures are worked out

Trails are the Ontario Trail Network segments in the Province’s layer. HaltonHillsIQ walks each trail’s line in steps of at most 10 m and keeps the steps whose midpoint is inside the official Town of Halton Hills boundary; a trail’s length here is the sum of those steps, and trails with less than 0.2 km inside are left out. The distinct-line figure counts every stretch once: working from the longest trail down, a step within 20 m of a stretch already counted is treated as the same ground. The map draws the inside parts, simplified to about 20 m.

Shares of the land are estimated by grid sampling: 12,375 points 150 m apart cover the boundary, each standing for 2.25 ha (27,844 ha in all, against the boundary’s 27,824 ha). A layer’s share is the share of those points inside its polygons. The shares are approximate, rounded to a tenth of a percentage point, and may not add to exactly 100.

Greenbelt hamlets are the Province’s hamlet points that fall inside the boundary. Conservation areas are read from the authority’s own park pages, name and address as published, and re-checked whenever the dataset is rebuilt. The layers say where a trail or a designation lies; they do not say a trail is open today or what is allowed on private land beside it. The trail associations’ own maps and notices are authoritative.
