Garbage, recycling and Green Cart in Halton Hills

Who collects it, how to find your day, what goes where, and what changes between town and countryside.

Summary

Halton Region, not the Town, collects garbage, the Green Cart, yard waste and bulk items in Halton Hills; since 1 January 2026 the Blue Box has been run by Circular Materials Ontario, with Miller Waste Systems answering collection questions. The Green Cart goes out weekly and garbage every other week, up to three bags or cans before tags. Garbage and bulk collection covers urban and rural areas, but yard waste is collected in urban areas only.

Administered by Halton Region (garbage, Green Cart, yard waste, bulk) and Circular Materials Ontario (Blue Box), not the Town of Halton Hills. Every answer below was checked against its source on October 8, 2026; the source is linked under each one.

Who collects it

Who collects garbage and recycling in Halton Hills?

Halton Region runs curbside collection of the Green Cart (organics), garbage, bulk waste and yard waste. From 1 January 2026 the Region stopped managing Blue Box recycling: Circular Materials Ontario now oversees residential recycling in Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville, and Miller Waste Systems handles Blue Box customer service, including missed pickups and replacement boxes.

Does the Town of Halton Hills handle any of it?

Not curbside collection. The Town's Essential Services page says waste collection, recycling and organics programs, including schedules, sorting rules and hazardous waste disposal, are provided by the Region of Halton, and links residents to the Region's recycling and waste pages.

The same page describes the Region's programs as including special and hazardous waste disposal, so those questions go to the Region too.

When is my collection day?

How often is each stream collected, and is it different in the rural area?

The Green Cart is collected every week on your collection day, and garbage every other week. The Region says garbage and bulk collection takes place in both urban and rural areas. Yard waste runs from the first week of April to the second week of December on your garbage day, but only in urban areas. Set everything out by 7 a.m. on collection day and not before 5 p.m. the evening before.

Did my Blue Box day change when Circular Materials took over?

No. Halton Region says schedules for all curbside collection, recycling included, stay the same, and you can keep using your existing Blue Boxes or clear bags. Miller Waste Systems, now contracted by Circular Materials, still runs the trucks.

My waste was not picked up. What do I do?

If only the Blue Box was missed, contact Miller Waste Systems at 1-855-752-4020 or area14@millerwaste.ca. If the Blue Box and the Green Cart were both missed, or any other stream was missed, use Halton Region's online missed collection form.

What goes where

What goes in the Green Cart?

All food waste, from fruit and vegetables to meat, bones, baked goods, fats, oils and sauces, plus paper items such as paper towels and tissues, paper plates and cups, paper egg cartons and coffee filters. Plastic bags, plastic food containers, glass, metal, Styrofoam, pet waste, diapers, coffee pods and PLA or BPI-certified plastic plates, cups and cutlery are not accepted. Line the cart with a BPI-certified bag, paper bag, newspaper or cardboard, and bag and tie organics: loose items are left behind.

Put only the Green Cart at the curb, not the kitchen catcher. The cart's weight limit is 23 kg (50 lb).

How much garbage can I put out?

Up to three garbage bags or cans every other week, and up to three more if each carries a garbage bag tag, for a maximum of six. Each bag or can must weigh 23 kg or less, cans can be no larger than 125 litres, and cans cannot have large wheels or a permanently attached hinged lid. Recyclables, food waste, electronics and household hazardous waste do not belong in the garbage.

What goes in the Blue Box now?

Since 1 January 2026 the accepted list is set by Circular Materials Ontario and is the same across the province. Halton Region lists items newly accepted in the Blue Box, among them single-use straws and cutlery, hot and cold drink cups, paper egg cartons, shredded paper, chip bags, cereal liner bags, bubble wrap, foam packaging, empty aerosol cans, pizza boxes, coffee pods and snack wrappers. Books, metal pots, pans and baking sheets are no longer accepted.

The Region's sorting guide still lists some of these items, such as snack bags, bubble wrap and plastic cutlery, under garbage. Its recycling page says they go in the Blue Box from 1 January 2026 and points to Circular Materials for the current list.

Bulk items, appliances, yard waste and tags

How do I get rid of a couch or a mattress?

Bulk waste is picked up every other week with your garbage, three items at most, at the curb by 7 a.m. Furniture, mattresses and box springs wrapped in plastic, flooring bundled to no more than 1.7 m by 1 m, toilets with the tank removed and dismantled wood bundled to the same size are accepted. Hazardous waste, metal and appliances, electronics, tires, building and demolition debris, soil and rocks are not. Do not pile items or put them in cardboard boxes.

Bulk items go to landfill; the Region suggests donating usable items to its Reuse Depot instead.

How do I put out yard waste?

Use paper yard waste bags or open, reusable rigid containers with no lid that carry a Halton yard waste label, each up to 125 litres and 23 kg. Tie brush in bundles no larger than 2 m by 1 m, with branches no thicker than 7.5 cm. Leaves, twigs, garden trimmings, fallen fruit and pumpkins are accepted; grass clippings, sod, soil, stumps and plastic bags are not.

Curbside yard waste collection is for urban areas only, so rural households are not served. Do not set it out more than a day before collection.

Where do I get garbage bag tags?

Tags cost five for $10 and never expire. Order them online or through 311, or buy them at selected stores and municipal buildings. Households with young children can get up to 40 free diaper bag tags a year, and households with someone who has a medical condition up to 40 free healthcare bag tags a year.

I just moved in and have no Green Cart. Where do I get one?

New Halton residents can get a Green Cart and a kitchen catcher free, and a broken Green Cart can be exchanged. In Halton Hills the pickup and exchange point is the Robert C. Austin Operations Centre, 11620 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 311 first to confirm carts are in stock.

Are wheeled garbage carts coming to Halton Hills?

Yes, to every Halton household with curbside collection, in two phases. Phase One (about 95,000 households) gets carts between January and March 2027 and starts cart collection in April 2027. Phase Two (the other 85,000 households) gets a mailed notice in spring 2027 and starts cart collection in spring 2028. Each household receives a 120-litre organics cart and a 240-litre garbage cart, or a 120-litre one if it asked for the smaller size.

The Region's page does not list Halton Hills streets by phase; use its phase lookup for your collection area. Do not use new carts before your phase's start date.
