Garbage and recycling

Garbage, recycling and Green Cart in Halton Hills

Halton Region, not the Town, collects garbage, the Green Cart, yard waste and bulk items in Halton Hills; since 1 January 2026 the Blue Box has been run by Circular Materials Ontario, with Miller Waste Systems answering collection questions. The Green Cart goes out weekly and garbage every other week, up to three bags or cans before tags. Garbage and bulk collection covers urban and rural areas, but yard waste is collected in urban areas only.

Property tax

Property tax in Halton Hills: 2026 bill and due dates

The Town of Halton Hills bills property tax for itself, Halton Region and the school boards. Its 2026 budget estimates residential tax at $1,003.89 for every $100,000 of assessment: $515.80 for the Town, $335.09 for the Region and $153.00 for education. The 2026 instalments were due 27 February, 30 April, 30 June and 29 September.

Who do I call in Halton Hills?

Town services, including roads, snow clearing, parking, by-laws and property tax, go to the Town of Halton Hills at 905-873-2600 (ext. 0 for the main desk). Garbage, water and other Regional services go to Halton Region at 311, and electricity to Halton Hills Hydro. The police non-emergency line is 905-825-4777; for an emergency, call 911.

Parking

Parking in Halton Hills: limits, winter ban, tickets

Unless a sign says otherwise, you can park on a Halton Hills street for up to six hours. From 15 November to 15 April, parking on Town streets is banned between 2 and 6 a.m. so crews can clear snow. Temporary exemptions to both rules can be requested online, and tickets are handled by the Town's own penalty system rather than provincial court.

Snow clearing

Snow clearing in Halton Hills: roads and sidewalks

Town crews clear main arterial roads first, then collector roads, then residential and rural roads, aiming to finish within 24 hours after a storm ends. They clear about 160 km of designated sidewalks within 24 to 48 hours, but not every sidewalk. The Town has no windrow program for seniors, and snow concerns go to Public Works at 905-873-2600, ext. 2603.

Noise by-law

Halton Hills noise by-law: quiet hours and complaints

In residential areas, Halton Hills' Noise By-law 2010-0030 bans construction equipment from 7 p.m. on weekdays, domestic tools from 9 p.m., and loudspeakers and amplified sound from 11 p.m. until 9 a.m. Persistent barking is banned at any hour, and some limits are stricter in the rural area than in Georgetown and Acton. Complaints go to Enforcement Services through an online request or 905-873-2600, ext. 2330.

Permits and by-laws

Permits and by-laws in Halton Hills: what you need

In Halton Hills you need a building permit before you build, add to, renovate or demolish, including decks, sheds over 15 square metres, new plumbing and structural changes; pools need their own enclosure permit. Applications are accepted electronically only, and fees are paid when you apply. By-law concerns, from fences to fireworks, go to Enforcement Services through an online request or 905-873-2600, ext. 2330.

Trees

Trees in Halton Hills: who looks after what

The Town of Halton Hills looks after trees on Town property, including boulevards; concerns go to Transportation and Public Works at 905-873-2600, ext. 2603. On your own land, the Town's Property Standards By-law requires dead or damaged trees and limbs to be removed or pruned. Woodlands over 0.5 hectares and Regional greenlands fall under Halton Region's Tree By-law 121-05.

Utilities

Utilities in Halton Hills: water, hydro and gas

In Halton Hills, Halton Region supplies municipal water and wastewater service, but Halton Hills Hydro bills it, every other month, on the same account as your electricity. Halton Hills Hydro distributes electricity across the Town and asks for at least two business days' notice of a move. Natural gas comes from Enbridge Gas, and homes on a private well are responsible for maintaining and testing it themselves.

Wards and council

Halton Hills wards and council: who represents you

Halton Hills Town Council has eleven members: the Mayor, two Regional Councillors and eight Local Councillors, two for each ward. There are four wards: Acton, the rural area and hamlets, North Georgetown and South Georgetown. The Mayor and both Regional Councillors also sit on Halton Regional Council, and the next municipal election is on Monday, 26 October 2026.
