How this database works
The Town of Halton Hills publishes its planning applications as Development applications (Town of Halton Hills application pages). HaltonHillsIQ reads it as published and groups the applications the source itself links — the same planning file, or the same site address — into a single project. Nothing is grouped by a similar name or a nearby location, and no figure is read out of a description.
Status is the municipality’s own word for each application, shown on every project page; the stage label is a plain reading of it. A project takes the stage of its least advanced application. Finished files are kept in the archive above, never presented as active.
The Town's pages publish no single status field. Each application's status is the first of these the page's own text states, outside its FAQ: a Tribunal decision, an appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal (or its predecessor, the Ontario Municipal Board), a Council decision, or that the files are being reviewed. The sentence the status was read from is shown with each application, in the Town's words.
Each application's type is read from the Town's file-number prefix (D09OPA official plan amendment, D14ZBA zoning by-law amendment, D12SUB plan of subdivision), and every run checks that the page's own opening paragraph names that type for the file.
Each Town page covers one site and states the file numbers filed for it; the files on one page share its site address and form one project.
Home counts are taken only where the page states a total ('a total of N units', 'N total dwelling units') or its opening paragraph states one unit figure; non-residential floor area only where the opening paragraph states it in square metres.
A project is placed on the map only when its site's civic address matches one address in the National Address Register extract exactly (same number and street). No other geocoding is used, and a site with no exact match has no position.
Map positions: Source: Statistics Canada, National Address Register, June 2026. Reproduced and distributed on an "as is" basis with the permission of Statistics Canada.
Only the Town's individual application pages are used. The Town's full 'All applications under review' list is not: it is loaded from the Town's GIS, which is published under separate terms.
Dates are given as precisely as the Town's pages state them (often a month and year), so they are listed with each application rather than placed on a timeline.
Wards are not shown: the pages do not state them.
Sources: Development applications (Town of Halton Hills application pages). The dataset is rebuilt from it and re-checked in place.
