Why it is listed
Hugh McKay, a grocer on Main Street, bought the lot in January of 1863 and lived in the home for over 80 years; McKay brought in novelties that were only available in Toronto at the time; he was the first man to sell bananas in Georgetown; Representative of Gothic Revival style architecture including gable roof with returned eaves, narrow, four-over-four segmentally arched double windows on front façade, entry with transom, sidelights, decorative hood and entablature
What the status means
On the register but not designated. Listing does not require a heritage permit for alterations, but an owner must give the Town 60 days' notice of an intention to demolish or remove a building or structure (Ontario Heritage Act, s. 27(9)).
